As journalist we always struggle to bring you accurate information quickly. Particularly in breaking news situations. That in mind, I have recently turned to social media, i.e. Twitter, to get the word out. There is no more perfect example than last Thursday. Daybreak had ended when a call came in about a gunman on the loose. He'd been suspect of murder and was considered armed and dangerous. With five hours until our next newscast Twitter became essential to me to spread information both to the public an to the station from the field. I was even about to share crime scene photos and update everyone about the manhunt in real time. I wasn't the only one, Sheriff Larry Mincks got in on the Twitter action too. Anytime new information became available he shared. Very cool. I am the first to admit that social media, especially Twitter, didn't seem like anything I'd get involved in. But, the proof is in the pudding. It was an amazing thing that happened that day. There is no way to get news out faster... the ultimate play-by-play. One of the best parts of Twitter and Facebook is that you the viewer can have your voice heard. You can help make the news what you want with your feedback! And, you know we love hearing it. We're moving away from a passive news cycle and I invited you to join. Follow me @Cyndi_WTAP. |
