Belpre, Ohio
The city of Belpre was the second permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. Established along the Ohio River in 1789 by members of the Ohio Company, the location was surveyed the previous year as Belle-Prairie, French for beautiful meadow.
Towering trees line streets throughout the city. They help frame charming older homes that testify to the history of Belpre. One of these, the Dana House on Walnut Street, was built in 1859, and is listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites.
From the earliest beginnings, Belpre residents have placed a high value on education. The community was the site of the first library Northwest Territory. They also hired the first schoolteacher in the Territory.
With a current population of nearly 7,000, Belpre is a vibrant entrepreneurial community.
It is the site of the Lee Middleton Original Dolls factory as well as boasting a retail outlet for Lloyd Middleton Dolls. The Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce lists more than 200 businesses and professionals. These include the service sector, artists, craftsmen and industry.
Belpre residents also give of their time, money and energy to volunteer organizations in order to support many recreational and cultural activities. From the Founders Day Festival in April, the Homecoming Celebration in August, the Apple Butter Stir-Off in October, to the Holiday Lights Festival in December, the Belpre year is full of celebrations and festivals,
Belpre also provides ample opportunity for relaxation and recreation for the entire family. Civitan Park borders the Ohio River and offers a boat ramp, fishing, swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, walking and jogging tracks, ball fields, picnic shelters and much more.
