Some families in West Virginia are getting a little extra help they need to make ends meet thanks to stimulus and state funding.
The Department of Health and Human Resources has started distributing $52 million in one-time benefits to families who are part of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program.
Regional Family Assistance Program Manager Vikki Nichols said most of it is stimulus funding and $10 million is from the state.
"We've found lots of children that didn't have beds to sleep in, now they have beds. We had a momma in Jackson County who had an infant and didn't have a refrigerator and was keeping the formula and their food in a little ice chest and we were able to get them a refrigerator," said Nichols.
Nichols said families are getting $250 for school clothes like winter clothes and supplies this month, up to $1000 in past-due child support, and assistance with buying household furnishings. They have also been helping with utility bills and foreclosures.
She said the funding has also been used for summer youth and nutrition programs.
For more information on the program and to see if you qualify go to your local DHHR office.
