Historic Harmar Bridge is one step closer to being open to pedestrians thanks to many skilled workers in the area.

About eight iron workers and pipe fitters put up steel plates to strengthen the bottom beams of the bridge Friday.

Volunteers from local iron, plumbing and pipe companies and unions are donating their time plus materials and equipment. Some of the companies are Pioneer Pipe, Leasco, and Armstrong Bridge.

"It's just a good thing to get a chance to give back to the community," said Iron Workers Local 787 Business Manager.

"It's critical to that whole economic vitality of the city and so we're just really pleased that local labor has stepped up and really doing a great job for us," said Marietta Mayor Michael Mullen.

Hutchinson predicts they'll have to work a couple of weekends to complete. Once it's done, Mayor Mullen says it will have to be certified but expects this won't take too long after that depending on the weather.

I cant believe that we have to depend upon volunteers and donations to fix this bridge. Last week you said it was the most expensive bridge in the state. But still, it is not finished. There needs to be a complete open investigation into why it has taken so long for the Corridor Dee Bridge to open. Many of the seniors here believe that is is still unsafe. I won't cross it until officials can prove that it is now safe.
