When the temperatures drop below freezing...in the middle of the day...it's as miserable as it is when the mercury climbs to the 90's in July.
And keeping warm is even more of a challenge...for people who don't have a warm home to go to.
With noontime readings below freezing...people without a home came to the "House to Home" day shelter on Eighth Street in Parkersburg to warm up and to get a warm meal.
While the number of people coming there has risen since august...because of the economy...the executive director says she's noticed even more here this week.
"We offer them hot coffee, cake or snacks in the morning," said Executive Director Marie Modesitt, "and if they have appointments with doctors, then they leave from here and do that."
The Salvation Army's overnight shelter in Parkersburg also has been busy...but Major Vernon Dolby says it was even busier last month.
At that time...transients were staying there overnight on their way south during the winter.
