Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- The state Board of Education has voted to take over Grant County's school system following an audit that showed students are not receiving a proper education.
State Department of Education spokeswoman Liza Cordeiro says the county is suffering from a leadership breakdown involving the local school board.
The audit was authorized in September and office of education performance audits executive director Kenna Seal says it showed Grant County's education system was bleak and appeared to be getting worse.
Interim superintendent Sharon Harmon was in Charleston on Monday and could not immediately be reached for comment.
Cordeiro says Harmon will remain as the county's assistant superintendent. The board has hired Ted Mattern to serve as superintendent.
