Dayton, Ohio (AP) -- Health officials in a southwest Ohio county with a diabetes rate nearly double the national level want to raise awareness.

A diabetes expo is scheduled for Saturday in Dayton with product samples, free screenings, and health professionals to answer questions.

Federal statistics show more than 13 percent of Montgomery County adults have diabetes, the highest rate in Ohio and well above the national average of 7.8 percent.

Officials says the county has large populations of two high-risk groups: African-Americans and people of Appalachian descent.

The Diabetes Association of the Dayton area says some 6,000 children also have pre-diabetes conditions that could worsen.
