Do you pay attention to how many steps you walk each day? One local company is working to make sure their employees know that answer.

"As the health department, we are supposed to model healthy lifestyles," MOV Health Department Director, Dr. Dick Wittberg says.

It's not just a regular pedometer, it's called a Fit Bit and it counts steps and calories burned. But it's also motivates workers to engage in all around healthy lifestyles.

Employee, Karen Bond is taking full advantage of the extra boost of motivation. "Instead of sending someone an email, I'm going to their desk and seeing them. And for me, I'm taking the stairs every day instead of riding the elevator. I notice a lot of other people in the company doing that now, too."

Bond adds, "We're involved in a physical activity challenge here at work and about 90 percent of our employees are participating and it's just a little activity to get people motivated and get people moving, and get people active."

The tiny device can actually fit into your back pocket, and it tracks the steps you make, and your sleeping patterns.

Employee Kristine Green enjoys using that aspect of the device, "I go to bed and say it tells you, I was in bed for 8 hours, but I might have been awoken 15 times during the night. So I average maybe 6 hours sleep."

Green adds, " I was a little skeptical, but after receiving it, I absolutely love it. I have definitely been walking more steps and trying to be above the average of the first quarter we're going for and trying to be aware of it."

It's an easy bit of healthy living information these health department professionals are excited to pass along.

RN Jennifer Mullen says, "I'm a huge advocate with my patients about maintaining a healthy life style and if you're not, how easy it is to start doing it."

Employees start of with small goals of around 6,000 steps per day. Eventually they will reach the daily recommended 10,000 steps a day.
