The age of social networking is upon us, and whether you know it or not, current and potential employers are looking at what you do. It's not difficult to find, either. Social sites make finding people coast to coast as easy as typing in a name.
"Anything you put out there is open fodder for anyone. There may be people who in their college days or younger days may have done something that they may not be crazy about their employers of future employers viewing," says career counselor Sandy Brown. "Often times they'll put things out without thinking. They need to use common sense."
What if what was posted about you wasn't posted by you? Friends on social sites can post videos, pictures, and information about you without your consent. Experts say, not to look for an employer to accept attempts to explain why certain material made it's way to the world wide web.
"I guess the old adage 'don't do anything you wouldn't want your parents to know' would be the thing to do, especially when your looking for a job" Brown continues. "Social networking is very common and it's a wonderful way to stay in touch with people you might not ordinarily see. But, common sense really has to be the number one factor when you are socially networking."
Every employer is different regarding their Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace pages. However, most agree that a lot can be learned with just a simple visit to a website.
"I don't personally (look at networking sites)," says Bill Meyhew, Manager of Gold Buyer in the Grand Central Mall in Vienna. "I feel it's on their own time. But, when it comes to a job or anything like that, if they're vulgar or crazy you can definitely find out by looking at their web page or MySpace or Facebook."
Brown recommends, if you are set on keeping your social sites active, you should run through all the information on it. Review all the pictures, posts, videos and personal information. If any of what you see embarrass you or could embarrass a potential employer, Brown says, it's best to delete it and revise your privacy settings.
