The Ohio Department of Education has awarded Marietta College with a $420,000 grant to build a new program.
The new program called Developing Core Teachers In Ohio's Appalachian Region allows 20 students to achieve a teaching degree tuition free. Marietta college applied for this grant and will be offering the program over the next two years.
Most of the people who applied are looking for their graduate degree in teaching. "Most of the participants already have a degree, in fact it's a requirement to be in the grant, you have to already have completed an undergraduate or bachelor degree, and most of those degrees are in a mathematics or a science related field," says Connie Golden, Professor of Education at Marietta College.
Because of a shortage of Math and Science teachers in Ohio, the program only admits students with those interests of teaching.
