Even though it's legal in Ohio, West Virginia and several other states, synthetic marijuana has been called a drug of concern by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Sheriff Larry Mincks said teens are trying to mimic the effects of marijuana with synthetic marijuana often known as K2. It is also reportedly sold under the brand names Spice, Genie, and others.
It is sold as incense in head shops in the Mid-Ohio Valley and locally Sheriff Mincks said parents have reported their teens getting high off of it.
"There has been no testing on it and using it is like playing Russian roulette. There have been psychotic episodes involving people and there have also been some studies that indicate that people suffer from similar symptoms of addiction," said Sheriff Mincks.
Sheriff Mincks said it's undetectable by drug tests.
Some states, primarily in the Midwest, have reportedly banned synthetic pot.
The Associated Press reports in West Virginia, at least two students in Wyoming County were hospitalized.
