It looks like the Wood County Recreation Commission will not be canceling their annual Fishing Derby despite possible water safety issues.

Last week we told you about the geese waste problem at a couple of Parkersburg parks.

Officials say the geese waste does heighten E. Coli levels in the pond and it could get worse as the weather gets warmer.

Right now though, officials say the E. Coli is at a safe enough level to go on with the scheduled Derby, a good thing because the fish won't last much longer.

"The reason we are going on with it is because of the fish. We can't push the date back any further because we stock the trout, there's a chance that if it gets warmer they might belly up before the kids catch them. So, we're stuck to the schedule mainly because of the trout," says Vickie Marshall, Executive Director for Wood County Recreation Commission.

The Fishing Derby is scheduled for April 19th from 9 am till noon, catch the golden trout and receive $100 cash and a trophy.

This is not safe. I have taken all of my children to the derby for years, but not this year. Don't you think they knew about this health problem long before now? Where is the Health Department? Don't you think they would step in and stop this un-safe event? Someone is going to get sick then they will sue the city and Wood County Recreation.
