It may be a little hot outside to think about cuddling up in a blanket. But one hardworking local group is making blankets to help comfort children in need year-round.
Wanda Stevens is one of them. She says: "I love to sew. Always before i never had time to sew, because I was raising 3 sons."
Now, she's turning out about 10 blankets a month.
These ladies make blankets for Project Linus. It's a national group named after the character from the peanuts comic strip.
Their mission? Providing security through blankets.
Cheryl Carpenter, Owner of Parkersburg Sewing and Quilting heads the group and give them a space to meet. She says: "Sometimes we end up giving to children that don't have anything else. They may have to leave their homes in an emergency situation of some sort and they may leave with nothing but their pajamas on. And if we give them a blanket they can be wrapped in, it's just like a hug."
The blankets come in all shapes and sizes. From full-sized blankets for teens down to tiny blankets for preemies. So that everyone can have that feeling of comfort.
Brenda Lowers works for West Virginia Birth to Three, one of the groups that Project Linus donates to. She says: "They're just a nice, homemade kind of quilted blanket or made out of different materials and things and they're all unique. You know, not just a blanket you buy in the store. We have a lot of moms that really appreciate you know, just getting the blankets and just that little special thing that little extra, it means a lot to them."
Project Linus also helps out Birth to Three with it's Community Baby Showers.
Last year the sewers gave out nearly 200 blankets in just 6 months.
But its not just about the blanket... But about the feeling it gives.
Cheryl Carpenter says: "They may just need to have that security. Maybe something just happened that rocked their world."
And that's why every blanket the group makes is special.
Wanda Stevens says: "It's filled with love."
The Project Linus group meets every second Friday of the month at the Parkersburg Sewing Center.
They would like to thank everyone who donates materials and money to the group, especially those long distance fabric gifts they get from Arizona.
