The West Virginia Public Service Commission wants you to get used to dialing the area code for all calls, even local ones before the second area code is issued.
You won't have to change your area code once the 681 area code is introduced March 28. It will only be issued to new telephone lines or services.
But the West Virginia Public Service Commission wants you to start dialing 304 for all calls starting this Saturday.
Your call will still go through even if you forget to dial the area code until it becomes mandatory February 28. If you don't dial the area code then, you'll get a message stating you have to dial it to get through to the other person on the line.
"The only thing that's changing is the way you dial a local call. Your coverage area geographically what is a local call to you now, that's not going to change," said Sarah Robertson, a spokesperson for the West Virginia Public Service Commission.
You'll have to remember to change any pre-programmed phone numbers including security systems, life safety systems, and internet dial-up.
