Humane Society officials and volunteers say that by this weekend, transfers of the more than 900 dogs transferred from a Wood County kennel should be made to outside organizations, so efforts to adopt them out can begin.

"What we have done locally is gone through and done evaluations of the dogs," says Maryann Hollis, the Humane Society's Executive Director. "Nothing major, just some quick assessments and evaluations to see which dogs are going to be the most adoptable, so we can keep those locally and get them out to the community."

But Hollis and others say adopting these animals, will be different than a typical adoption. For one thing, not all of them are puppies. Many are older dogs, used for breeding purposes. There may be questions as to how many have been domesticated...and housebroken.

"I just visited one who will not move and is shaking like a leaf," Hollis told us. "We had to pull her out of the loud noises and the barking just to get her to relax at all. That's just an example of what someone may experience with these dogs."

Doctors at the Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital add that some animals which cannot be adopted may have to be euthanized. But they believe that virtually all of them should be able to function and adapt well...as long as they're placed with loving and patient owners.

"We at Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital do not endorse large kennel operations, but feel that the dogs in such kennels are no less deserving than a loved house pet when they are in need of vetinary care," Dr. Michael Rhodes wrote. "We all hope the humane organizations involved with the Whispering Oak Kennel dogs will be able to find loving homes for all of them."

You can apply to adopt one of the dogs by visiting the Humane Society's web site...www.hsop.org...or by calling 304-422-5541.

Processing of applications will begin Saturday.

Well said, Amanda. There are always many, many (way too many) wonderful animals in need of loving homes, even when the local puppy mill hasn't finally been shut down...and all of them, both the mutts and those intentionally bred for greed, deserve as much kindness as we can give them.

This whole thing makes me a little angry. Everyone is running to adopt from this mill but yet very few of you run to the humane society and give any of the ones that were dropped off for other reasons. It just seems very pety that now the world wants to help. What about the ones that arent pure breed? We adopted a mix collie/beagle and he lived 9 wonderful years with our family. If you wanted to adopt where were you before this weekend?

While knowing this woman was out of control and had way too many dogs, at least she tried to get the ones in trouble some care. as a pet owner myself I would be more appalled at the clinics turning away a dog in need than one that is helping. Think about it--- if your pet was sick or in labor (with a puppy that wouldn't deliver) would you like to go to a vet and be turned away because they did not agree with you or something you have done in your life--NO!! you would want one holding up the oath they took to help. If a rapist and a murderer can get medical care with no questions asked why should a dog be turned away just because the human involved has too many animals to properly care for. At least she had been trying to do the right thing by seeking medical help for one in trouble..

I would like to know why so many animals are having to leave Parkersburg without this area being able to get a chance to adopt. We are the community that has supported the human society - we are the ones that have volunteered and we are the ones that help support with all the money donations and supplies. I think it is unfair to the community to ship all the dogs off without giving the community a chance to give them a loving and caring home. There are so many willing to help but other organizations have come in and the community has been shut out except for giving donations. I believe you are doing the community an injustice by not allowing them to help adopt and give loving homes to these dogs.

my parents got a puppy from this "kennel" and had only 2 days to get her to the vet to get her checked out .. well needless to saay we went the nxt day, the puppy we got was almost blind & had a potentially fatal kennel cough which was contagious to other dogs.. even the vet we took her to was upset with this "mrs. roberts".. and they had been trying to get in trouble several times.. but everytime someone would go to check her out, she would have things in order and to appear okay.. also when she handed my parents the puppy, my mom put her in the grass and "mrs roberts" immediately told her not to put her on the grass.. that they werent suppose to be on the grass that young or something really stupid?! i hate to see what happened to the puppy that we took back to her, either put to sleep.. or used for a breeding dog..

The allegation of a state owned mobile gas unit being used to "euthanize" a large number of dogs is of concern to me. Does anyone know if it is really legal to use this method? If it is legal, then my next question is WHY is it legal, when lethal injection is considered the most humane way to euthanize an animal?

When I found out my dog had a ruptured disc and the surgery was going to cost me a little over $8,000 here, I wasn't sure how I was going to afford it. I was put in contact with Dr. Rhodes and during my time at PVH, I saw and experienced nothing but professionalism and genuine concern for my dog and myself by Dr. Rhodes and his staff. Dr. Rhodes came in on his day off to perform the surgery, along with the 3 other surgeries (nice "off" day). Why come to WV? Because Dr. Rhodes's clinic charges $6,000 less for this risky procedure that only specialists will do down here. My visit was followed by 2 consultations by Dr. Rhodes & 3 phone calls to check in on my dog. Strange behavior for someone who only cares about money, dont' you think? Dr. Rhodes, I applaud you for holding yourself to a higher standard during this ordeal while taking verbal abuse by people in a town who obviously do not appreciate you. Come to Georgia. We'll be happy to pay full price for your care & quality services.

I hope my story will encourage anyone who is considering adopting these dogs to please do so. At this moment the puppy mill mom I adopted on July 16 is resting comfortably at my feet. She came from a raid at a mill in TN where the conditions were much worse than at Whispering Oaks. I come across her volunteering at the shelter she came to. She was having a very hard time living in that shelter. Compared to the 70 others that were brought after 2 weeks she remained huddled in a corner and would not come out even for hot dogs. But in the 6 weeks I have had her - she has done alot. I even named her Lottie - cause she has done so much in such a short period of time. Some say it should be because she hit the doggie lottery. I found the same article that is posted at the HSOP site - print it, post it and follow it. Great advice. Granted - we have a long way to go - the best advice I would add - treat these dogs in a happy, normal manner - they will be happy.

I thought the rescue of these dogs was suppose to be about making lives better for these animals, so far all I've heard is negative comments. Who was suppose to take care of these dogs? What responsible Vet. would turn their back on them Iwould like the name of those Vets because that's who I would not take my pet to.

Four years ago I bought a chihuahua puppy from Whispering Oak kennel I had no idea what kind of Kennel till now but you should know she doesn't take the puppies to vets for immunizations. She does them herself. Our chihuahua has some genetic disorders common with chis so not sure if it was because of the breeding process. I do take her to PVH and my parents use PVH. You could not ask for a better place to take care of your pets. They will come in for emergency visits. We don't know if Roberts came in often or just for emergency visits. I know she mentioned visiting for hard deliveries. I see why everyone is so upset but sometimes we need to slow down our hatred and think. How many times have we went to a pet store? Where do they get there dogs? We all know where. I have seen many hunting dogs kept in wire floored cages? Yes the woman had WAY TO Many but the mentioned violence is not how we should be thinking.

Sounds like doctors that haven't been down to volunteer are busy taking care of the rest of the pets in this area. Hmmm ever think of that? Isn't Dr. Rhodes the only one in this area that does back/spine surgeries? I've known people who normally take their pets to other vet clinics for vaccines, but when their dog gets hit by a car, their regular vet ships them over to Parkersburg Vet. I wonder why that is? Maybe that's because they have the best veterinarians in the area over there! Not to mention that when all the other vets in town go on vacation, they tell everyone to go to PVH. I first-hand witnessed an incredible act of kindness from Parkersburg Vet. One of the doctors operated on this little old lady's dog (normally a very expensive surgery I'm sure) at no charge. That lady went to pick up her dog and when she was told there was no charge, she bursted into tears and was giving everyone that worked there a hug. Sounds like a big, bad vet clinic to me!!

I agree with Concerned Citizen about Parkersburg Vet Hospital...they should have made every effort to put a stop to Mrs Roberts' puppymill especially after euthanizing dogs for her. This is not the first I have heard concerning PVH involvement with this puppymill. I am sure Dr & Mrs Rhodes and their business are going to miss that huge chunk of money that they were making from this puppymill; although I am sure she got some hefty discounts for the volume of "business" she brought them.

My husband and I bought a pug puppy off of sharon probably 10 years ago, while at her home, we were not allowed to go into any of her buildings, sharon would get on her golf cart and bring the dog down to her house, we thought that was strange! we took the pug the next day to the vet, the vet informed us that the pug was a much older dog and was not a puppy like sharon and the papers said, we then tried to contact sharon on the phone she would not answer our calls! we wondered how long it would take for her to get in trouble, then yesterday I was watching wboy news, they reported the story but didn't say what kennel it was, we hurried up and logged on to wtap.com and saw it was sharon, it's about time they got her, I just wonder why it took so long?

I saw where 200 dogs have been moved to Virginia and Missouri. I read it in the Charleston Gazette. If they can move them out of state, them when can't we adopt them now locally???

Posted by: Pet Lover in WV on Aug 28, 2008 at 11:35 AM
If Mrs. Roberts thought her population was getting to be too many and euthanized a bunch should it not have occurred to her to stop breeding for a while until she could sell or give some of her animals away to get to a more manageable level? Of course not because then she wouldn't be making money on the puppies. You can not tell me anyone can properly care for 500 dogs at any given time let alone more than that with only a hand full of people. Food, water and shelter are not the only things dogs need. They have to have human contact. Anyone who doesn't believe that should try experiment with humans. Put them in a cage give them food and water and nothing else for a few days and see how they like it. Animals have feelings too! I can tell you right now I love my animals more than some people. Unconditional love will do that to you.

Posted by: Amy Location: Parkersburg on Aug 28, 2008 at 11:32 AM
If there wasn't a market for particular breeds of animals, this wouldn't be an issue. People who purchase bred dogs for hundreds and even thousands of dollars should be ashamed of themselves. Rescue an animal that needs a home or donate to spay and neuter programs.

Posted by: Tami on Aug 28, 2008 at 11:23 AM
This has been nothing more than a witch hunt, and now people are trying to slander PVH and ruin their reputation. Where does it all end. This is absolutley ridiculous!!! How about this, why not put everyone who ever purchased one of the puppies in jail? For crying out loud!!! Hope you all enjoy helping PETA and the Humane Society out in giving up all your rights to them. You all make it so easy for these extremist orginazations.

Sounds like 'concerned citizen' has some issues. If any of that is true, so what? Parkersburg Vet has never made a single decision that wasn't in the best interest of the pet. Owners can euthanize their pets at any point and time. Did you ever think that maybe Mrs. Roberts realized her kennel situation was getting out of hand and made a proactive choice to reduce the number of pets. It sounds to me like PVH is the only practice around that put personal feelings aside in order to take care of Mrs. Robert's pets when they needed it. Meanwhile, other clinics slammed the door in the face of Mrs. Roberts and her ill pets. The veterinarians at PVH are more accessible to treat pets than any other clinic in town. In the many years that I have taken my pets there, I have seen them not only save my own pets, but many others. It sounds to me like 'concerned citizen' is nothing more than a past employee with a chip on her shoulder. Someone who is possible jealous of the success of PVH?

Posted by: John Location: Vienna on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:03 AM
If true I will not take my pets to the Parkersburg Vet Hospital if they had ANYTHING to do with this kennel. They are trying to save themselves now that their name has been connected to this monster of a woman. Sharon Roberts should be put in a wire cage and made to live in her own filth like she did the dogs.

Posted by: Kristy Location: Parkersburg on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:50 AM
Also, while you are doing some homework, ask the HSOP how much work PVH and Dr. Rhodes does for them. Ask some of the other vets in the area how many breeders are their clients, how many of their employees are BREEDERS!!! Veterinarians have an ethical obligation to treat ALL animals. It is not their duty to discriminate.

Just another note for Concerned Citizen - Have you ever heard of defamation? Perhaps Libel? Because what you have just written is completely false!

Posted by: Your.Information.Is.Wrong Location: No Long Pburg, Thank Goodness on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:04 AM
To the so called Concerned Citizen - Perhaps you need to take a bit of your own advice and research the facts. If you had, you would have known that Dr. Rhodes was out of town (1) during this "mass euthinization" and was not involved with it in any shape or form, and this event was certainly not under the direction of Dr. Rhodes - So check your sources and speak with the state vet as it was under his direction (2) he was also out of town during the "rescue" of these puppies so how would he volunteer?? Maybe someone needs to mention the fact that Dr. Rhodes and his staff do a huge amount of work for the humane society and you can confirm that with the humane society. Concerned citizen, why don't you reveal yourself? I am quite sure you won't!!!

Posted by: Sherry Location: Vienna on Aug 28, 2008 at 07:56 AM
Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital are the ones that suggested Whispering Oaks as a kennel to purchase from. Also, one of the vets personally told me that Sharon ran an excellent kennel and was terrific to her dogs and that he had been there frequently. Now they do not endorse large kennels?

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: Parkersburg on Aug 28, 2008 at 07:35 AM
You failed to mention that Parkerburg Veterinary Hospital (PVH) has been servicing the Whispering Oaks Kennel for many years. PVH under the direction of Dr. Rhodes also orchestrated a mass euthanization in February of 250 animals using the mobile gas unit controled by Dr. Starcher the State Veterinarian. While Dr. Rhodes comments portray a nice image they do not correctly represent his recent actions. Please feel free to research my comments. You will find them to be factual. The gassing was conducted by Dr. Starcher, State Veterinarian and Dr. Todd Shockey of Parkersburg Veterinay Hospital under the direction of Dr. Rhodes. Please also noted the Dr. Rhodes has not volunteered any time to the rescue effort.

The leader of the Humane Society needs run out of town. This was nothing more than legalized theft, and a power trip. You can tell by looking at these animals that they were cared for. Who do these people think they are? It is really pretty sickening, all these people in the video acting like they ran to the rescue of these "poor poor" abused animals. Open your eyes people. It is simply amazing how people just blindly line up to follow along. How easy you all make it for groups like PETA. Let me ask you all. Do you eat chicken, hamburgers, steak, eggs? Do any of you raise cows, chickens any farm animals? And yet you jump right on board with PETA, shaking your fist at a woman who has been targeted and bullied by the new "leader" of the humane society, peta organization, and the so called rescue groups. These dogs were taken from airconditioned buildings and placed in a warehouse, and everybodys patting themselves on the back for all the "great work" being done.... geezzzzzzz how sick

Posted by: Fred Location: North End on Aug 28, 2008 at 02:16 AM
Potential owners of these dogs should be advised the HSOP has a somewhat difficult adoption procedure. You must fill out an application which requests a substantial amount of personal information, wait for a period of time, and even then, if approved, you may not get the specific animal you originally wanted.

Can anyone tell me what law was broken? I've called five law enforcement agencies so far, and no one can answer. Maybe it is illegal to make more than a cop.?

Yes i was just reading this and me and my mother adopted one of those dogs about 5 years ago and it was awful my mom wanted to take them all home with her because she felt so sorry for them. The dog we got is a chocolate Dashound and her name is coco when we first got her she was very scared of people and would just run in a circle but she is doing VERy well now and we are so glad that we got her.
