You may not necessarily be in the market for a new appliance but starting Monday, September 1st, you'll be able to save some cash if you buy certain ones in West Virginia.

All this week you won't pay the 6% sales tax on any energy star item up to $2500. It applies to all different kinds of items.

Ben Myers, Sales Manager of Vienna Lowe's says "Insulation, windows, any kind of thing that helps seal up your house for the winter time" are eligible. He adds that programmable thermostats could save up to 30% off your energy bill.

When it comes to appliances right off the bat many of them cost more than your standard ones. But salespeople say the costs work out.

When describing an energy star washer, Randy Haught of Lowe's Appliances says: "These take 13-15 gallons of water. Versus a regular top loader is 38 - 42. So they take a third of the amount of water. In the long run you're saving probably 30 - 40 dollars a month on your water bill.

Ben Myers, Lowe's Sales Manager says: "It's going to help out the environment and it's going to help out your pocketbook as well."

The West Virginia energy star sales tax holiday is expected to cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some stores like Lowe's are throwing in extra incentives on top of the discount and also some Labor Day sales Monday.

This is old news, but I feel compelled to reply to the statement that the tax holiday "is expected to cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars". The tax holiday was brought to life by our Attorney General, Darrel McGraw, due to a law suit against Visa and MasterCard. Fraud being the issue, the settlement was for 11.6 million dollars to support the Energy Star Tax Holiday. This is a win for all WV residents with no negative effect on the State. Visit GoGreenMart&More.com and sign up for e-mail announcements as the tax holiday will be implemented again in 2009.
