They say a dog is man's best friend, and a room at the Humane Society of Parkersburg is waiting for their new best friends.

About 900 dogs have already been rescued or adopted, after they were handed over to the Humane Society by their owner who was breeding them.

But something future owners need to know is that the last set of wagging tails, may need a little more attention and training.

"We want them to be fully prepared to know what they are taking on, or the potential of what they're taking on," MaryAnn Hollis, executive director of the Humane Society, said.

Christy Durnell, a potential owner of one of the dogs, said she is a perfect candidate.

"We already have one dog, so hopefully we'll be able to give another a good home," Durnell said.

However, they're not letting any of these dogs leave without a good home, so before you can get a dog, you have to fill out an application.

Just for the record..I own two pets that are VERY well taken care of and I don't have a fortune in both of them...I believe this event qualifies as a scam....

Dear Anonymous: It is impossible to tell if a female dog has been spayed unless you can see a scar, and sometimes those cannot be found during a regular physical examination...frequently veterinarians are not able to determine if a female has been spayed before they proceed to surgery. I hope the dog you adopted still has a "decent" home with you, since you think people need to go elsewhere to find a "good" dog. Whatever you mean by THAT--difficult to decipher from your post.

I'm glad none of these nimrods that have nothing but negative things to say about the humane society want to "buy" one of the rescued dogs. Great! Those animals need loving homes & owners that will not only pay the adoption fee but continue to pay for the animal's needs for the rest of it's life. What they DON'T need are a bunch of winey, what can I get for free, I want something for nothing losers that are running this country into the ground. You need to learn to take care of yourself without a govt handout before you could even consider caring for an animal that didn't ask to be brought up in the environment that was bestowed upon it. I suppose the ones griping about the cost of an animal have never volunteered or done anything at the HSOP to help. The animals there deserve better owners than the ones bellyaching at paying a small cost for a lifetime of unconditional love.

In the first place the animals wern't mistreated till the "inhuman society" got their hands on them. All those involved in the theft of those animals should be arrested

So my guess is that the first to posters don't really have any clue as to what it costs to operate the Humane Society. You do know they employ people and own a building and grounds to upkeep. Not to mention the huge expense of simply feeding and caring for these animals. I think it is completely reasonable to ask for some cash for the dogs. I learned something once in my econ class. It's helped me a lot through life and I like to offer it up to whiners and people who think everything costs to much. It's called TNSTAAFL. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH. Get over it. My m-i-l got a free puppy from Rinks. It had Parvo. Now how free was that dog? Not to mention it has colitis and allergies. So yeah, free ain't all it's cracked up to be and unless YOU are adopting one of those dogs then just keep quiet. And the above story says the majority of the dogs have been adopted already, so what about that being adoped as fast as possible? I think that's already happened.

If you haven't read, these dogs cost more because the adoption fee also includes first shots, worming, and part of it goes to getting the pet nuetered. So, in actuallity, it costs the same amount as adopting another dog, unless you don't take your pets to the vet for routine checkups and shots.

Did either of you even see what you are getting for $100. you are getting a list of extras a mile long plus you are giving these little guys a new lease on life. The humane society isn't the place to go to get a "cheap" dog. If you can't afford to adopt one, then how are you going to afford proper care?

I so agree with the first two comments. It should not cost so much to adopt one of these unfortunate doggies. They needed good homes fast. I think the Humane society saw their golden goose in these dogs. Is is humane to be so greedy and dishonest? Do they feel that only people with lots of money can love and care for a dog? Not so, these dogs should have cost no more than a normal adoption fee, of course with the application process, which is good. Thumbs down to the Parkersburg Humane Society this time.

Unfornutely I think a lot of this was a major money making scheme. It should not cost so much to give an orphaned animal a loving home.

Why does it cost so much to adopt one of these dogs? I remember when going to the pound to get a pet it was a few bucks....I wouldn't want any of these dogs.
