The AARP recently released a survey rating Marietta as excellent and good for retirees, but city officials are striving for something better.

Marietta Mayor Michael Mullen has introduced "Walk Marietta", an initiative to make Marietta a more walker-friendly city.

In the first phase, trained volunteers will walk the city and identify problem areas.

So, Mayor Mullen has designated October 2 as "Walk Marietta Day", where many volunteers will hit the streets and conduct sidewalk surveys.

In phase two of the project, the city will pursue grant money to fix any sidewalk issues.

I live on the Westside of Marietta. I don't know what Mr. Mullen is thinking. But I can tell you that the sidewalks on this side of town need alot of work. I am a tax payer, just like alot of others that live on this side of town. Nothing seems to ever get done on the westside. All they worry about is the area on the east side of the muskingum river. I understand why though. Mr. Mullen and the rest of his staff doesn't have to live over here and deal with it. Also, they ripped up the pavement on Virginia Street early in the summer and they still haven't fixed that problem. Just remember Mr. Mullen, we on the westside do pay taxes and we do vote. So come election time, remember that.
