"I'm having trouble with my son...I'm on County Road 9...he's gone berserk."

That phone call to authorities by Sharon Berecz, the mother of defendant Jason Berecz...is what brought Deputy Scott Parks to the residence where Berecz was arguing with his mother and his girlfriend.

Helen Gragan and her son, Jared, were returning from out of town at about the time Berecz was confronted by Deputy Parks.

"The deputy started telling him to 'put the gun down', 'put the gun down'," Jared Gragan testified. "The person then lowered the gun, and began firing".

It was shortly afterward, almost 10:30 that evening, when Sgt. Parks, radioed the dispatcher to call for the Reno Emergency Squad.

"I've been shot in my right eye," Deputy Parks radioed. "I've been shot in the right side of my face. I'm going back towards Marietta on County Road 9."

"I put my hand up to my face," the deputy testified Wednesday. "I could feel it was all mushy. I could tell I'd taken a shot to the face. I couldn't feel very much, but I knew I'd been shot."

Sgt. Parks says he was temporarily blinded by the shot, although he now has full vision. He also testified he was told the bullet missed his eye by one millimeter.

Berecz is charged with 17 counts, including three counts of attempted murder and five counts of felonious assault.
