Some people like the idea of same day voter registration...
"I lost my card, and I didn't think I could do it too close to the time," Dave Piggott says. "So, if it was that way, I could have voted."
...and some, particularly long-time voters, do not.
"I think there would be some people taking advantage of it," says Russell Bell.
It's for the convienence of the voter that West Virginia is considering an idea of same-day registration that other states have looked into...and some have adopted...that would allow people to register right at the polls where they also vote. But Wood County's clerk, who studied the idea for the state clerks association, is opposed to it.
"The poll workers have a long and very busy day already," County Clerk Jamie Six explains, "and to add this to their plate to take care of on election day, we don't feel it would be fair."
Six says a limited form of registration...will be offered as a compromise. That's allowing voters to register during the three-week early voting period that preceedes primaries and elections.
"As long as it's done on the county level," he says, "we feel confident that, because we're on a statewide system, and verify the voter isn't from another county, we still can go through the confirmation process."
A committee of the West Virginia Legislature is to hear from Six on Monday.
According to news reports, several major states, including New York, Texas and Florida, have considered the idea and have declined to implement it.
