The U.S. Labor Department reported Friday that 2.6 million people lost their jobs last year. This is the highest number since 1945.

Despite this grim news some local employers are still hiring.

A representative of Workforce West Virginia said employers in technology and health care fields have open positions.

According to Manpower, an employment agency in Parkersburg, most of the jobs clients are contacting them about are temporary positions.

Manager Sandy Brown said the current openings are mainly because of retirements. Employers are looking for skilled workers especially in health care.

"The health field not so much in the support areas as it is in the actual hands on health care like nursing, physical therapists, those particular areas and then we've got a couple orders in for chief financial officers," said Brown.

You can apply for these positions by going to Manpower at 1047 Emerson Avenue Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Workforce WV and the Washington-Morgan Community Action offices also offer assistance.

If you live in Ohio but were laid off in West Virginia you can still go to Workforce WV with your last pay stub.

You can contact Workforce West Virginia at 1-866-420-4531 or go online to https://www.workforcewv.org. The Washington-Morgan Community Action phone number is 740-373-3745.

A community action representative recommended looking at https://ohiomeansjobs.com/omj/. This Web site pulls job openings from several sources and you can look for openings within a 25 mile radius.

The Washington County Department of Job and Family Services also lists job openings at http://www.wcdjfs.org.

All you hear about are health care jobs, those people should look into the local colleges and their requirements to get into those programs. Practically impossible unless you are right out of high school
