The number of home-schooled children in West Virginia has jumped more than 700-percent over a decade.
The state Department of Education says home schooling increased from nearly 600 children in 1991 to more than 4,200 in 2001.
Kanawha County led the state in 2001 with 346 home-schooled students. Cabell County was second with 234, followed by Jefferson County with 210.
Marshall County reported the fewest home-schooled students with 10.
State education officials say they can only speculate on home schooling's growing popularity.
Karen Larry, an assistant to the state Schools Superintendent, says some parents are concerned about their children's academic success or want a more religious-oriented education.
