When the phone rings Linda Montgomery of Leechtown is the one in her household that is always the first to answer, but a few weeks ago she recognized an odd number on the caller ID.
"I answered it and there was a recording indicating that there had been a breach with my credit card with Traders Federal and I needed to press one to talk to a representative, "said Montgomery
The only problem was Montgomery didn't have a credit card with Traders Federal. At that moment she knew that this was a scam and then her assertive personality kicked in and she called the number back.
Montgomery said, "Who am I talking with? And she said 'Tracy,' of course that could be a fake name. And I said, 'I don't have a credit card with Trader Federal.' And I said, 'Why are you calling my number, because I'm on the do not call list?' And she said, 'Someone had stolen their phone number they were using it in four other states."
Montgomery immediately called the Parkersburg Police and the police told her they had already received four calls about this same scam.
Wood County Sheriff, Jeff Sandy warns the public about the increase of credit card scams in the region.
"It's very important that our Wood County citizens are aware that there are scam artists out there, " said Sandy.
If you think scam artists have tried to contact you, call your local police department.
