An expanded 4 lane Rt. 2 or a new rerouted 4 lane Rt. 2 needs to be constructed. Any accidents or house fires can backup traffic for miles and then you have to take a detour that takes you forever to get back on track. It just takes too long to get to Wheeling from here.
There aren't any businesses to come to, Senator Boley!
A plan to expand Rt. 2 into a 4 lane highway has been seriously discussed since the early 1970's. It was envisioned that 4 lanes would connect Parkersburg, Huntington, and Charleston and be dubbed 'The Golden Triangle' and bring unparalled economic growth to all three areas (much like Corridor D was supposed to boost the economy of Wood Co. once the highway was completed). Considering how fast plans move in W. Va., it's little wonder that nothing has been done.
Expanding Rt.2 in some locations, particularly in Pleasants County, would be near impossible. I live along Rt. 2 between Belmont and St. Marys, "the narrows". Expansion options are the railroad tracks and the river on one side and a massive rock wall on the other. "If" it would happen, how would we maintain it? We can't maintain Rt. 2 as it is.
