Who Will Take Care of Animal Control Services After Hours?
WTAP News
On July 1 the Humane Society of Parkersburg will no longer provide after hours animal control services for Wood County. So the county commission is looking into other options of who can provide this service.

I recently called on the humane society to come see about pittbull with too long of a tie out rope. People have to walk off of the sidewalk into street to get past this house. If owner is on the porch they will warn passerbys of the dog and tell them to go into the street. But if they r not out there, you can imagine what happens. Mind you this house has plenty of room to tie a dog out back. The officers came, shortned the rope a little and left talking about how beautiful the dog was. The owner brags about how the dog picks and chooses who it bites.(have been told at least 4 have been bitten) The other day this dog lunged towards my kid and its collar snapped in half, it knocked down my kid and ran off. The owner is very lucky it didn't bite my child. One of these days it is really going to hurt somone. My point is, is that it doesn't do any good to call on them to do their job. I could only imagine what their nightshift was like, probably didn't even leave the office. CONCERNED IN PKBG.

I would volunteer for after hours animal control and I would work for free, just permit me to use a firearm within city limits, nothing more annoying than some furry critter messing on your lawn while you sleep or getting in your trash. Well there is one other thing annoying than that, having someone walk their dog and permitting the beast to deposit in your yard, and then not cleaning it up. But we legally cant shoot people so why not shoot the beasts'??

Parkersburg does not have any leash laws so what is it people expect them to do? Owners need to be responsible for their pets. Also, I see no sense calling in people from out of town to help with animal control, by the time they would arrive, what could be done? This is rediculous! Should have just paid a little more to the HSOP like the additional funds wasn't unreasonable considering the rate of inflation! Council are unable to bully the HSOP into less money so they want outside people to do the job. PLEASE!

Something needs to be done. I know the humane society has limited funding for the amount of animals they receive and have to care for, however I am very upset at the fact that animals, specifically dogs, that are running the streets where children could be hurt by them. There is a dog off of 36th street who has been there for five days and the humane society has yet to come get it. This needs to be delt with.

Until the Humane Society gets off their soap box and quit whining and start raising money and get their own house in order....the county has to do something. The big waste of taxpayers money is giving to the Humane Society when they can't figure out how to provide services with what they have.

Have a law make people fix their animals if they want to keep them. The people put a lot of money into animals, sometimes i think we need to put this money into feeding the hungry and homeless we have in our area, its really sad because every time you pick up the paper its needing money for animals. I dont believe you will ever be able to control the animals, especially cats, they are everywhere so we just keep forking out the money for other peoples animals that they no longer care for. This is not right either, we are loosing our jobs, people are going hungry right around us and there seems to be a greater need to feed the animals, I love animals mind are taken care of and live my home, we have one cat and one dog, treated like humans. Make restrictions have no more than one and make them be fixed put a limit. Our economy is pretty bad to keep asking for money does not get it and making the state do mopre is paying out more. whats the answer ah ah ah ah ah who knows

The Humane society is a joke. They don't come out when called, expect the parkersburg police to do their job by catching viscious dogs before they come to get them, they recieve large amounts of money from the community and the city and county governments, have a large bank account and still ask for more. Yet when you adopt from them you get a dog with minimum vet care and you have to pay the bill for a spay/neuter. They keep poor records, have employees who make up lies to get more money for the humane society, and don't give any support to other local human societies. They no longer have after hours, kinda funny since they have always been that way. You call they call you back and say to call the office in the morning. Big loss.

They provide animal control? I have had two personal experiences where I have attempted to get animal control services from this humane society, and not only did they not offer any assistance, but were incredibly rude. It is a shame that animals are put to their deaths due to the poor public relations skill and greed of this shelter. After visiting this shelter, most people prefer other area facilities where finding homes for unwanted animals is more of a priorty than fundraising and squeezing every possible cent from the city. We very much need an alternative. They have not done their jobs and have not provided the services for which they have been paid taxpayers' money.

The Humane Society has always provided great service regarding animal control. Until such time as all people spay/neuter their pets, all of us will need to depend on the Humane Society. To even think about hiring an outside contractor to take care of after hours animal control would be a big waste of taxpayers' money.
