About 150 cemeteries in Wood County have been forgotten by the general public and if left alone for much longer could eventually be totally lost to everyone.
This number comes from the Cemetery Survey Committee who's working to make sure those who have died are not forgotten.
Jeff Smith of Vienna created a video of one district describing who these people are and how their grave sites are deteriorating.
"I encourage people to get involved in looking into their past and find perhaps that one of their relatives is buried in one of these cemeteries in Wood County and they'll take an interest in taking care of great great grandma. You also find a lot of Civil War veterans are buried in these cemeteries. They fought for what is now West Virginia and I think it's important to remember these people," said Smith.
If you have any ideas or resources to help pull the cemeteries out of disrepair you can attend the committee's next meeting on July 23 at 7 p.m. in the Judge Black Annex building in the Fort Boreman Room.
