Demosthenes Dukas, known to his fellow council members and constituents as "Demo", has died.
A family aide says the 78-year-old Dukas, who was defeated last year for re-election after serving three council terms, died Monday morning.
Dukas was elected to council in 1997. Outspoken, he often clashed with the administrations of former mayor Jimmy Colombo and current mayor Bob Newell on a variety of issues. Dukas missed several council meetings in his final term, reportedly due to health issues, and was defeated last year in the primary election while seeking a fourth term.
Mayor Newell, however, remembered that, before he was elected to council, Dukas was known for his community involvement.
"In some way, he was trying to serve the public," the mayor said. "He was big at one time in the YMCA, and some other organizations. Demo always had people on his mind, he always did."
Dukas' brother, James, a noted actor, passed away earlier this year.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 P.M. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday.
