Nearly 60%of the votes were against a levy that would fund building and renovating Marietta City Schools.

Some residents WTAP spoke with said that they are sad it didn't pass because of the construction jobs that would have been created yet others say they don't see a need to build new schools.

Tuesday the Marietta School District bond issue and tax levy was voted down by more than 1200 votes.

The issue would have raised $48 million over 37 years to fund the construction, additions, renovations and improvements to school facilities.

The tax levy worth .5 mill would have been over a period of 23 years to pay for the cost of maintaining these classroom facilities.

Jack Moberg, president of the Board of Education, said "We lost $30 million of basically our own money that would have come back from the state admittedly we had to put up more money to get that to come back. We lost a lot of construction jobs over a three to four year period.

A resident who did not want to go on camera said that he voted against the levy because he doesn't think the schools are in bad shape.

Moberg said the board has not discussed whether or not the bond issue and tax levy will be put on the ballot for the next election.
