Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire up to 1,000 temporary part-time workers to conduct the 2010 count in West Virginia.

Senior partnership specialist Richard Hartman says workers will be needed to hand-deliver census questionnaires to homes that have post office boxes or are in more rural areas.

Workers also will follow up with people who haven't responded by around April 1.

Workers will earn about $12.50 an hour and receive 55 cents a mile reimbursement for mileage.

Hartman says applicants must be 18 years of age, have transportation and pass a general aptitude test.

Successful applicants will be offered positions in February.
