It all began when a man walked into the lobby of the People's Motor Bank on Washington Boulevard shortly before 4 P.M. and demanded money. In addition, he told bank employees he had a bomb in a red bag he left behind.
"We called for assistance from other agencies," said Sgt. Terry Williams of the Belpre Police Department. "We called the Washington County Sheriff's Office to track the guy, we called Wood County to get a bomb dog to come over to make sure there was no bomb in the package."
In fact, a search of the package and the bank failed to turn up a bomb. Money, however, is believed to have been taken by the middle-aged suspect...who remains at large.
"They're saying late 40's--early 50's..." Sgt. Williams said of the suspect's age, "(with) a goatee, blue or black togaggan, with a white emblem on it, a brown bomber-type jacket and tennis shoes."
The FBI has been contacted about the robbery, which remains under investigation by police. No one was injured.
Anyone with information on the robbery or the suspect is asked to contact the Belpre Police Department.
