All drivers know to stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off students, and the possibility of a new law would reinforce that rule.
Already passed by the West Virginia House of Delegates, now it's the Senate's turn to help determine if prison time will be given to drivers who cause injury or even death by not stopping for a school bus.
Many are pushing for the law, including the family of a six-year-old girl who died after being hit by an oncoming car when getting off the bus. That incident happened more than two years ago in Lincoln County, but it's a concern for parents everywhere.
"If they're speeding when they see a school bus and they don't come to a stop, or they're on their cell phone texting or whatever; yes, it would be nice if they could be penalized," Heather Boggs, a parent, said.
"You stop when you see a bus. You're careful. You're cautious, and if you see their stop sign or they're stopped you stop. If people are not stopping, they certainly need to be punished," Alice Lawrence, a parent, said.
If the bill passes, drivers who cause injury could face up to three years in prison. In the case of death, that sentence could raise to ten years. The bill also increases fines and adds license suspensions for lesser offenses.
