A big day for museum goers in Marietta as local art and history museums are working with the Ohio Historical Society for accreditation.
It may come as a surprise to know that not many national museums are accredited.

Burt Logan, the Executive Director/CEO with the Ohio Historical Society, says "the accreditation program is managed by the American Association of Museums. There are around 17,000 museums across the country and only about 5% have been accredited."

That works out to be just over eight thousand museums. And the figure may be low because being accredited is a lengthy and involved process. Every little bit of the museum looked and and evaluated.

Logan adds, "it's a very thorough snapshot of an institution. It's measuring how well an institution performs against established standards. It's actually about a two, two and a half year process."

Everything from finances to interaction with the public is under the microscope when working to gain accreditation. But those at Campus Martius are positive their accreditation will come through.

Jean Yost is the Chairman of the Museum Management Committee, and says "the accreditation project from O.H.S is just and extra thing to give a little pride to the community. Like he said, there are very few museum that are accredited. I think we'll get through the process."

And after the accreditation goes through it's the hope of the museum to continue to showcase the Mid-Ohio Valley's history's and educate for the future.
