In this Dec. 18 photo, shoppers are photographed on 34th Street, in New York. Holiday shoppers are racing to the end of the season at a more feverish pace this year, with retail revenue up 5.5 percent during the last weekend before Christmas. |
Twas the day after Christmas and all through the stores the shoppers were buying, exchanging and cashing in galore!
"A lot of JC Penny shoppers buy gift cards for gifts," says JC Penny Assistant Manager, Grace Combs. "So, you're seeing a lot of people redeeming their gift cards."
It wasn't just using those holiday cards. Stores around the area are looking to move holiday items out, and fast.
"We always have an after Christmas sale which starts the day after Christmas," says Tina Salmans, co-owner of Mulberry Lane. "We have 40% off all the left over Christmas, winter, and snowman merchandise we have left. So, we're always very busy."
In posting their best season since 2007 retailers have a lot to be thankful for and Mulberry Lane attributes their success to their uniqueness and selection.
"I think people enjoy coming in stores like this because they get personal service, they get more unique items to give as gifts and they also get it wrapped for free and some extra perks that the big chains don't offer," Salmans says.
Retailers are already looking forward to next years Christmas season.
"We go to market in Atlanta in two weeks and we will start ordering [next year's] Christmas merchandise then."
Even though the holiday season was profitable some retailers are counting on the days after Christmas to perk up overall holiday sales even more.
