Charleston, W.VA. (AP) -- When the state learned that Governor Manchin had an election opponent this year, no one expected that opponent to be a Democrat.
But Freshman Delegate Mel Kessler said he was motivated to challenge Manchin in the Primary because of the way the Governor has treated the Legislature.
Kessler says Manchin treats the Democratic-dominated Legislature more as a group of assistants rather than as partners.
Manchin said he's focusing on running for office rather than against a particular candidate, and praises Kessler's passion for the issues.
The Raleigh County Lawmaker faces a tough race against Manchin, who has outspent him in the primary $627,000 to $12,000.
Whoever wins the May 13th contest will face Republican Russ Weeks, a former State Senator, in the General Election.
