Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- The Ohio Supreme Court will decide whether cities have the right to require police officers and other employees to live within city limits.

The high court agreed Wednesday to hear appeals brought by the cities of Lima and Akron, where officials have fought a 2006 state law that blocked cities from imposing residency requirements.

The cities argue that home rule powers ensure their right to set the mandates.

Lower court rulings have been divided over the issue.

Firefighters and other city employees say they should have the right to live where they want.
