Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Charleston officials say the state's largest city is expecting $1.84 million in federal stimulus money for projects ranging from streets to homeless shelters.

Brian King with the Mayor's Office of Economic and Community Development says Charleston automatically received the funds because it's considered an entitlement city by the federal government.

The city also is seeking another $2.8 million in stimulus money to renovate Slack Plaza and build a fire station in South Hills.

But City Manager David Molgaard says getting that money will be highly competitive; the federal government is expecting up to 10,000 applications and $30 billion in requests for about 100 grants totaling $210 million.
