A soldier from Parkersburg is receiving the third highest military award today for his service in Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Jason Fetty received the silver star award, for valor, today at the Pentagon. Fetty was awarded the star for his heroic efforts in Afghanistan. He successfully steered the suicide bomber away from a crowd of 150 people at a new hospital.
In the act, he was injured along with two others. Fetty was looking to protect the Afghan government. "He wanted to get to the Afghanistan government, and we just can't allow that to happen, they can't do their job if their fearing for their life all the time, or go to functions," says Staff Sgt. Jason Fetty, U.S. Army Reserve.
Fetty's mother and sister were able to make it down for the ceremony today. Earlier this year Staff Sergeant Fetty was also awarded the Purple Heart. He is assigned to the 339th combat support hospital in Pennsylvania.
