Feeding geese at the park is something most people do when visiting the great outdoors, but now the city of Parkersburg is picking up the mess, 150 pounds of geese waste each and every day.
"For the last several years the geese have been multiplying around the Parkersburg City Park pond, Southwood Lake, as well as Pointe Park, and of course has the numbers compound, so do the problems," says Mayor Bob Newell, Parkersburg.
Problems that had the city bring in a biologist to examine the potential dangers of the waste, including health concerns. City council members have discussed different solutions and have come up with a three step program to eliminate the geese.
"It's a long term and very humane method, they basically harass the geese, and this has nothing to do with the ducks, it's only the geese. So, they'll harass them in different ways until it makes them uncomfortable to be at those locations," says Mayor Newell.
Uncomfortable is also what residents are feeling, knowing that one of the steps is euthanization.
"Would they say the same thing if there was the same problem with dogs or cats? Would their choice of method still be to round them up and exterminate every one of them? I think not," says Mathew Lamp, area resident.
These solutions are still up in the air, Council has not made a decision yet, but the city is certain of the problem, geese waste is interfering with park activities.
