Friday afternoon, Parkersburg police and Humane Society officers followed up on a tip from an anonymous caller.
The caller said that animals were being abused at a home on Pickering Street and officers say what they found was a sad sight.
"May God strike me dead on the spot. I would never ever hurt an animal in a million years," said Russetta Naylor.
Naylor and her boyfriend John Snider are both charged with five counts of animal abuse. Abuse that police say went so far it killed two animals and left the other three in a critical state.
"The three puppies were starving to death, had mange and their fur was falling off. The conditions were filthy," said Parkersburg Police Chief Bob Newell.
Naylor says she was framed, "My ex-boyfriend starved my animals to death. He murdered them."
The couple lived at the same home where police and humane society officers say they found the abused dogs in a cage hidden under a tarp.
Naylor says she was sick, "I was in bed for two weeks. I had the flu and my back was out of place and I couldn't take care of my babies."
The humane society's director says the dogs also had parasites in their intestines. Rich Hudson says, "The condition could have been going on for months and it can become even more critical over time. What hurts us the most is when people don't realize that these animals have rights and emotions and feelings and they can't tell us when they're in pain."
Naylor says she loves animals, "I accidentally ran over a possum. I got a shovel and buried it. I'm just not that type of person."
But still, she's being charged with a crime that she says she did not commit.
Parkersburg Police have issued an arrest warrant for Naylor's boyfriend. He has not yet been located.
