A five vehicle crash was reported about 6 p.m. Monday on Ohio Route 7, two miles south of Coolville in Athens County.

Ohio Highway Patrol Sgt. Max Norris says the crash started when a truck pulling a dirt track race car on a flatbed trailer was waiting to turn left off Ohio Route 7.

That's when a camaro, driven by Andrew Upton of Reedsville rear ended them at high speed.... slamming into the trailer being towed by Jerry Swain of Coolville.

The camaro lifted the race car off the trailer as it plowed underneath it.

The trailer skewed into the oncoming lane where it was hit again by a passing Jeep Cherokee.

The Jeep lost its front wheel and driver's door, rolled several times and landed in a field.

"The driver of the car, (the camaro,) that was southbound, " explains Sgt. Max Norris of the State Highway Patrol, "... was taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, and the driver and passenger in the truck, were not injured."

The driver of the Jeep, Jodi Dagney of Point Pleasant, was flown to a Huntington hospital, while her passenger, Patricia Call, was taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the white camaro, Andrew Upton, was also taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

The people in the red pick-up were not injured, though their truck suffered a blow-out.

A police report says charges are pending.

I also drive the stretch from near Coolville, and while I always see a few hotdogs who are speeding, I also see Sheriff's cruisers, State Forestry cars, ODOT trucks and Highway Patrol officers periodically... not regularly, but often, on various days. If there IS a problem on the two-lane portion of Route 7, it should be called to their attention for increased patrols. Would you feel better with speed traps and cars hidden alongside of the roadway? I think not. But, they will respond to citizen requests to patrol. Last weekend, we saw a drunk pass us at 75 and used a cell phone to call it in. Within ten miles, we saw the Highway Patrol had pulled the car over: Thank you, officers!

My husband and I travel to Parkersburg 3 times weekly. It is so scarey. The other drivers will pass you when there is oncoming traffic, drive right on you rear bumper, where as if you had to stop suddenly, they would drive right into you. It's even worse on the 4-lane. Everyone seems to think it's interstate and the speed limit is 70 or higher. The State Patrol need to patrol that section of highway more. We very seldom see any patrol cars when we're traveling.
