A Washington County woman has a broken arm and nearly a 1000 cuts after her own pet Rottweiler attacked her Sunday.

Washington County Dog Warden Steven Strahler said 54-year old Sherida Atkinson was taken to St Joseph's hospital and then transported to Charleston General Hospital this evening after attempting to break up a fight between her two dogs.

He said that this isn't the first time the Rottweiler has bitten someone. Earlier the dog bit one of her adult children.

Strahler took the animal into custody and the owner asked that it be euthanized.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department notified neighbors to keep children inside. No one else was injured.

I would suggest you request this new story be re-written then. The way it is written mislead people and gives the breed a bad name. So if the Comment from the family and friend are correct then this is another wrongfully written article.

Jessup i just want to let you know how stupid you sound. The lady that got hurt is my best friends mom and let me tell you this I have been to her house and she can handle the dog, Untill you know all the facts you should not judge anouther person. She did not want the dog put to sleep but that wasn't her choice if you are upset about that go talkt to the people who killed the dog not the victim. I feel you owe this family an apology and you are very rude for what you said.

To all who make comments on the Rott story!! I'm the Mother of the lady that got hurt in all this. She loves her dog or I should say Dogs. She has many at her place right now. All different breeds!!(8)Thanks to my grandchildren Christina & Jessica for telling the truth on this subject. I talked to my daughter yesterday--Is she worried that she may never have complete use of her arm or hand--NO!! She thanked God that my two great grandson's that was with her at the time didn't get hurt. They had come to her house to see their old friend, the Rott!! And she cried & cried over the lost of her dog. So those who commented & didn't know the facts--You should write an (I'M SORRY COMMENT!!) to my daughter.

I am a rottie owner and they are not for everyone. they are a loyal, loving breed however they are also head strong and takes someone who knows how to handle the dog to own it. I hate to see that it got put to sleep because the owner could not handle the dog. I also hate that it gives another reason for people to hate my dog. she is a wonderful dog, she is a rescue from a home who beat her. She has very right to be mean but is the most gentle dog I have ever owned. I feel sorry for the owner that got bite, but I really feel for the dog. I think people do not realize what they get when the get a dog. Too many people get them for looks or "protection" without doing the research to see what breed is really good for them. I hate the fact that the only time you see my dog breed in the news is when something goes wrong with people and the dog gets blamed.

This is in reguards to Diane Jessup's comments...This is my mother you are speaking of and WTAP gave out the wrong information on my mother..She has raised more dogs than you probably ever will. She rescues dog for the Humans society. and she is licensed!!!!! FOR AT LEAST TEN YEARS. As far as the dog biting someone else in the family that was my brother and he provoked it...he took his dog in the kennel with my mothers Rott against her advise...So therefore I would advise you to be sure of YOUR information before you judge!!! Yes WTAp has been informed of the mistake. FOR YOUR INFORMATION MY MOTHER WANTED TO KEEP HER DOG AND DID ON BLAME THE ATTACK ON THE DOG!!! THE STATE SAID THAT HE WAS A THREAT!!!! I pray that this never happens to someone in your family and that you do not have to go through what my family has. IF you have anymore question or comments please feel free to ask.

Comment to Jessup - I am the lady's niece & you have no idea at all what you are talking about. The dog (whose name was DJ) was mine before she took him & he doesn't have a mean bone in his body. To clear up what WTAP has reported, she doesn't have 1000 cuts & is going to be ok. The person that he bite in the past was chocking DJ for no reason whatsoever, so the dog defended himself. DJ was never a threat to anyone. When he lived with me, he was my small children's dog & I never worried about them being around him. DJ was not trying to attack my aunt, he was going after the other dog that had just tried to attack him & my aunt was trying to break them up & he accidently got her. It's foolish people like you who speak before they know the full truth of an event that gives animals & people a bad name. For your information, she has owned Rotts in the past & knows how to take care of dogs. It was completely an accident but people like you can't see past that the dog was a Rottweiler.

Proof positive that when dogs make headlines it is because owners are foolish, foolish people. Obviously since the dog had bitten an adult family member before, they were on notice this was an unsound dog. I have NO sympathy for people like this who give a breed of dog a bad name because they aren't up to owning one. It does take brains to own a capable dog. Labradoodles are fine for sheeple - but not everyone wants a "pet rock". An intelligent, strong, spirited dog is a fantastic companion for those intelligent enough to manage it. So, my question is, when will we start licensing OWNERS and not dogs?

I'm very sorry the lady got hurt, but why put a dog down that was only doing what was natural. She stepped in between the dogs putting herself in harms way it wasn't really the dogs fault....dang I hate to see that happen on both parts her getting hurt and the dog being put down for what was being instictive to him.:(
