Officials say there is no structural damage to the Parkersburg-Belpre and CSX railroad bridges after Wednesday's barge accident.

The U.S. Coast Guard said a tow boat was pushing a dozen coal-hauling barges up the Ohio River when the barges hit the CSX railroad bridge.

Two of the barges came loose and struck the road bridge, right along Belpre's riverbank.

West Virginia Department of Transportation engineers inspected the highway bridge yesterday afternoon.

Officials said the Ohio side pier was scratched.

CSX spokesman, Robert Sullivan, said trains were up and running again by Wednesday afternoon.

The cause is still unknown and the U.S. Coast Guard continues to investigate.

that would work if the barges hadn't been tied to a dock already. they broke free. not really a whole lot could have been done.

I beleive the railroad bridge was struck in the past month. I think some restrictions should be put in place when the river is flowing fast, such as pull over and tie up and wait for better conditions. The tow that got in trouble at the Bellville lock caused all kinds of problems for the folks up the Little Kanawa river. Nuff said.
