This week marks National Police Week, Law Enforcement Memorial Week, to honor officers across the country for their sacrifices.

There was a prayer of remembrance in front of the 187 crosses on display in front of the Judicial Annex in Wood County Monday.

Each white cross represents the men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty last year nationwide.

"Those are jobs that are very important for us and we often take for granted and so it's important that we set aside a special time to really express appreciation for the job they do to keep our communities safe and secure," said West Virginia Rep. Alan B. Mollohan, First Congressional District.

Several officers and community members received awards at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 79 banquet and ceremony.

John Young was named Officer of the Year, Gary Nichols was awarded Citizen of the Year, Detective Sergeant Rodney Shuman received the Citizens Appreciation Award, Joe Martin received a merit citation, and Brad and Megan Workman received the Good Samaritan Award.

The following children of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 79 members received $500 scholarships- Chelsea McEwuen, Kristen Lockhart, Amber Holliday, Timothy Stephens, and Colton Miller.

Thursday is Peace Officer's Memorial Day.
