If this November's election is the event it's hyped up to be, the Washington County Board of Elections expects lines out the door. The problem is, right outside their door is the WASCO Courthouse Cafe.
"The people in the courthouse have been supporting it, they give us a great menu choice, we love the great lunches they serve, buy when it comes around to election time, we have voting in here, which makes us a polling place," says Peggy Byers, Director of the Washington Co. Board of Elections.
The Ohio Revised Code says no one can loiter, congregate, or do any kind of campaigning within 100 feet of a voting location. Byers believes the commotion of the cafe could sway voters.
"Our office is small enough to have a few booths in here, but we have to move into the hallway too so people could walk out and do there voting there. That leaves us with policing people so they don't come in with a message to vote for a certain candidate on their t-shirt or hat," says Byers.
Just this week, Board members made the Washington County Commissioners aware of the issue, they offered possible solutions like having a change of scenery.
"We could perhaps, take the tables out during the 35 days before the election, when this is a polling place. Someone on our Board suggested getting some type of curtain, making ourselves more separate from the cafe," says Byers.
Either way, the Ohio Revised Code is just that, a code that the Board of Elections must follow. Byers and other Board members are trying to find a solution before the commotion causes a conflict.
