Hundreds of walkers came out to support the fight against cancer at Civitan Park in Belpre Friday and Saturday.

They're fighting by raising money for research, education, advocacy, and service. The money goes to the American Cancer Society but it benefits families here in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

"I wanted to walk for my brothers," said Lois Abbott, a Cutler, OH resident.

Abbott walked with her daughters and great-niece in memory and honor of family members who had and have cancer.

Abbott's brother Glen passed away almost six years ago and her brother Ralph passed away thirty-three years ago. Now her brother Ronnie has a type of cancer.

"(It's a) very slow kind and he's getting along so good," said Abbott.

There's even more good news. "I had cancer on my nose but they got it and it's cured."

The Abbott team and about 73 other teams gathered to raise money to find a cure at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Washington County.

"I mean everybody has somebody that's got cancer and they just need to find a cure and I'm not sure if they ever will," said Diane Pugh, one of Abbott's daughters and captain of the Abbott Team.

In the meantime, this team of fifteen family members is still finding hope.

"It's a sad thing but you got to have fun. Walk and make your legs and everything else hurt," said Pugh.

"We all hold together in hope," said Abbott.

Organizers say they raised $218,587 so far and some of it will go to pay for a few bills from the event but the majority of expenses are donated.

Plus you can still donate at any Peoples Bank in care of Connie Grimes through August.
