If you drove on West Virginia Route 14 this weekend you might have had to take a detour through Rockport. It's scheduled to reopen Monday but the project isn't finished yet.
Over the weekend Drexel University students and West Virginia Division of Highways crews load tested the Route 14 Tygart Creek bridge.
They tested how much weight this concrete bridge can handle to see if they can remove the weight limit posting. It's a Federal Highway Administration project. Drexel University students say it's called "Research and Development of a Rapid Bridge Testing."
"We know this road carries 15,000 cars a day and we set this up for a weekend closure so that we could inconvenience people as least as possible and we apologize for those we have," said Clifford Essig, bridge engineer for WVDOH District 3.
He says if the tests show they can allow trucks to carry more weight across this bridge it could help area industries.
He expects preliminary results to be ready in three to four weeks.
After the study's done, he says they also plan to do some repairs.
