Generous residents of the mid-Ohio valley have contributed more than $10,000 to aid in disaster relief for Parkersburg, Iowa.

WTAP and the American Red Cross Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter joined forces to collect donations since the holiday weekend tornado struck.

The Iowa community of almost 2000 residents was almost flattened by an F5 tornado over the holiday weekend.

Live news reports from an NBC affiliate in nearby Waterloo, Iowa have brought the devastation into homes in the Parkersburg, WV region.

Volunteers and WTAP staff members made appeals on the air to help raise funds for the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund.

By the end of the on-air appeal, $10,600 had been collected and counted, with more checks coming in the mail and expected to arrive before week's end.

Those who would like to donate can still mail checks made payable to the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, American Red Cross

IF you have time to volunteer, and IF you are able bodied, you can contact the local Chapter of the American Red Cross. They hold regular training for disaster relief volunteers. You may not be able to go immediately, but you could call and talk with Sharon about your interest and options. Try the chapter house at 304/ 485-1733.

Gene, There are too many avenues to post here, so this is a link to the Des Moines Register article that has all contacts listed in the article: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200880527017 Parkersburg (Iowa) received 5-6 inches of rain last night (me included), so clean up efforts have been hampered. Regardless, your thoughts and offers are greatly appreciated. I'm very proud of my home town at the moment.

I grew up in Parkersburg WV, and am now a reporter/columnist for a nearby town of Parkersburg, Iowa. The residents need help, and this morning, local tv stations here reported that my old stomping grounds were attempting to help. Imagine my amusement when I heard "Parkersburg WV" mentioned. On behalf of the state of Iowa, I thank you for your efforts.
