Recipients wouldn't have to rush to use holiday gift cards under a bill now working its way through the Ohio Legislature.

Gift cards wouldn't be allowed to expire for two years, and the measure also would prevent retailers from charging fees that reduce the value of the cards during that time.

The legislation passed the Senate in June, but has been held up in a House committee while representatives work to clarify which cards would be covered. About a dozen states have passed laws regulating gift cards' expiration dates.

A spokeswoman says Attorney General Jim Petro's office has received about 460 complaints about gift cards in the last five years. She says the complaints included expiration dates and extra fees.
