Early Saturday morning a CSX train hit a Waterford man lying on the Muskingum River Road railroad tracks near Waterford. Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks says Joshua Schaad remains in serious condition Saturday evening.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office received a phone call at 4:47 a.m. from the train engineer. The engineer reported Joshua Schaad was curled up in a fetal position on the tracks when the train approached.
The train engineer told officials he saw Schaad laying there but couldn't stop the train pulling 90 cars of coal in time.
The front of the train hit the 28-year-old and ejected him from the track.
Schaad was taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in serious condition with numerous injuries and was taken by helicopter to the Charleston Area Medical Center.
Saturday evening Sheriff Larry Mincks said Schaad remains in serious condition but is progressing well.
Sheriff Mincks said it appears Schaad may have been drinking and was walking home and laid down to go to sleep on the tracks.
Sheriff Mincks said suicide is not suspected at this time and officials continue to investigate.
