Ray Schoenke is President of the American Hunters and Shooters Association.

His message is that, if elected President, Barack Obama won't take away the firearms of outdoorsmen.

He says the group's support came when obama reacted to a U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down a gun ban in the nation's capital.

"His statement was, 'I'm glad it has been clarified, I support that ruling, I respect it, and I will follow up with it.'," Shoenke recalls. "To us, that was a huge statement."

Schoenke, who played for the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins during his football career, says the National Rifle Association is trying to confuse voters, by saying efforts to reduce gun violence in urban areas will result in law-abiding citizens losing their right to have guns.

Obama say's he supports the 2nd amd. but he also says he feels towns, cities, countys, and states have the right to control firearms anyway they want. For some reason people are not listening to everything he says.with him you have to read between the lines to see he wants to stump on all your rights. And for the person that said the NRA didnt back McCain do your research. The november issue of American Rifleman they say they back McCain.(pg.10,12,60,62-63,98) and just to let the Dem's no the NRA also supports Joe the gov. Manchin..

What Ray Schoenke didn't tell people was that his group, The American Hunters and Shooters Association is actually a group of anti-gun people who are trying to confuse the electorate and cloud the gun issue so people will vote for Obama. Read all about the American Hunters and Shooters Association on any pro-gun site. These people DO NOT represent real gun owners or hunters so don't be fooled.

Why does anyone buy into any of the crap they are feeding you from either side? Presidents are congressionally restricted to foreign affairs. How can they lower taxes, create jobs, or put a chicken in every pot when they are FOREIGN AFFAIRS? The Senate and House are both Democrat controlled and have been since 2006. If you remember they promised to stop the war, reduce taxes and bring down the cost of gas. Hot air is all a polititan gives you, it never changes. If they try to ban guns, let them. We can take over again just like we did the first time. Maybe next time we will make a better government

First of all, I don't know how anyone thinks that a firearm is fundamentally bad. If you look at all 3rd world countries with a socialist or dictatorship rule you will see that the people of those countries are at the mercy of gun toting radicals. They can't protect themselves from these people, why? I give you my observation as to why I think this. They don't have a weapon to protect themselves or their families. I don't see why we need fully automatic weapons either, but where do they stop or will the anti gun stop till they have them all. I have guns for 2 reasons, reason 1: I enjoy to hunt sometimes, I not an avid hunter either, but there have been times when coyotes and other varmints have killed livestock and I need a firearm to protect them. Secondly: I am going to protect my family from any would be wrong doer. I hope I never have to use a firearm in this event. Police are great, unfortunatley after something has already happened. Not their fault, they don't have a crystal ball.

IF OBAMS IS PRESDENT HE WILL TAKE AWAY GUN RIGHTS JUST READ HIS RECORD AND IF U ARE NOT STUPED U WILL SEE FOR YOUR SELF. NOW U NEED TO B FAIR AND GIVE THE OTHER SIDE.I WILL NOT BUT YOUR AD/S PRODUCTS IF U KEEP LYING TO ME.

It's simple. You take away firearms from those who have a license you leave them vulnerable. A criminal doesn't care whether they have a license or not. They don't care that the law says no firearms. You leave all the responsible people in harms way.

Posted by: Craig Location: Williamstown on Oct 24, 2008 at 10:48 PM
P.S. Go to this groups website and dig into their agenda a little bit. You might be suprised. You might also really look into the voting record and other soundbites of Barack before you decide to vote for him.

Posted by: Craig Location: Williamstown on Oct 24, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Barack will take every weapon (especially handguns) that he can, plus tax ammo to the point that the average Joe can't afford it. I wonder if his bodyguards pack heat or not? Sorry, but this statement is a mute point due to the fact that "AUTOMATIC WEAPONS" were BANNED in 1934. "The only ban that anyone wants is on automatic weapons." You can not own one of these weapons without buying and being approved (by the Feds) for a special permit. Do not confuse military style and true "AUTOMATIC" weapons. One pull = one shot vs. one pull = empty the magazine.

Any one that thinks this man (BO) will not take our guns away needs to check the facts. He has done more to take away our 2nd amendment by his vote and two face lies that any one man I know of (other than Brady). He marks the beginning of our nations down fall if elected. No God, No Guns, No Freedom, and then hand us to the rest of the World (un-armed) to do with as they please (united nations - gun ban). America needs to wake up and realize we are at a cross roads that will determine the freedom of our children and the generations of our children to come. You need to Vote and you need to think about what you are voting for.

Are you people for real do you not have a clue how govt works no single person as president can take any rights away without a majority backing.Just more scare tactics you should be more afraid of someone who tells you he wont let someone take one of your rights away because he may not be able to stop that

Obama will appoint Judges to the Supreme Court that think like all liberals, ergo interpret the constitution, Then kiss your rights goodbye. When they pry them from my cold dead hands.

The previous comments sum it up pretty well. Not much else to say except that I am one more person who is not fooled by the likes of Ray Scoenke. He is either a liar or a complete fool, or both. If he really thinks that his hunting gun is safe because he crawled in bed with the gun banners, then he needs to open his eyes. Unopposed gun control will eventually take all guns. That means your's too Ray. Denial and self delusion won't help you. Those who make deals with the devil never win in the long run. Keep up the fight for personal freedom, never give an inch! I can count on the NRA for that. In fact I just sent another donation to the NRA-ILA two days ago. I encourage everyone reading this to do so as well. Every bit helps. Obama Democrat controlled congress = gun bans. When asked about handgun registration he said, "I don't think we have the votes to make that happen." Well, with a Democrat congress he just might.

The only ban that anyone wants is on automatic weapons. There is no need to have them unless you are in the military. An assult rifle is an offensive weapon, not a defensive weapon.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 24, 2008 at 05:05 PM
AHSA is a front for the Brady campaign. And not one so carefully constructed that a "journalist" shouldnt trip over it in standard research. In 2000, Schoenke donated $5,000 to Handgun Control, Inc. Contributions were also made to HCI by the Ray and Holly Schoenke Foundation, enough to earn him a slot as a major benefactor of the annual HCI fundraising dinner." For those not paying attentention, HCI was the first org to call for a complete ban on semi automatic firearms (like many use hunting) many years ago bk425

Has anyone noticed that although the NRA keeps "blasting" Obama, they will not endorse John McCain. Not to advocate one against the other, but unfortunately, McCain is also a threat to "law-abiding gun owners." Check your facts on both candidates, for instance - John McCain on Gun Control and the Second Amendment Although McCain currently holds a C rating from the NRA, his voting record on Second Amendment issues has been relatively strong; some speculate that his low rating may have something to do with his support for campaign finance reform laws, which has had an impact on gun rights advocacy groups. McCain has consistently opposed a federal ban on "assault weapons," but irritated many gun rights groups when he supported a bill increasing federal regulation of gun shows.

hu huh. yeah. Obama will take away your guns because he is an arab muslim. hu huh. yep. what other nonsense can you all think up? why doesn't the NRA hand-out AK 47's to the public - every man woman and child. This will ensure that everybody has a gun, and it will surely stimulate the economy with this new gun production! And then....

Posted by: Joe Location: Ohio on Oct 24, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Sure he won't take them away, but he will make it nearly impossible for the law-abiding to purchase new guns. Further, Obama only made his statement after the DC ruling; before the ruling he clearly stated that he thought the DC ban was constitutional. If he thinks the DC ban is constitutional, what else is considered constitutional?

ONE WAY TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM, DO NOT VOTE FOR THE OBAMA - HE MUST BE STILL STRUNG OUT ON POT FROM HIS EARLY DAYS IN SCHOOL

Posted by: bandofotters Location: NH on Oct 24, 2008 at 09:07 AM
Cool how Schoenke bastardized an Obama talking point to the extent that it is totally illogical and out of touch. Name a gun control law that doesn't impact the ability of the law-abiding from owning or acquiring a gun. So what Schoenke is saying is simply that Obama does not plan to confiscate "all" firearms already in people's hands. Everything else is fair game. That's a bit narrow doncha think?

Obama has consistantly supported measures to limit and eventual take away ALL of our guns! He supports legislation to limit magazine capacity, require micro imprints to be place on each bullet case fired and even to BAN all semi-automatic firearms, int that bill it was written to include any weapon that you can reload without manually placing a round in the chamber. Barak Obama even supported legislation to revoke concealed carry permits from anyone not law enforcment or mmilitary. So in short, Barak Obama doesn't want to take away our guns, he just wants to limit our choices and ultimatly our ability to defend ourselves

Posted by: Me Location: Marietta on Oct 24, 2008 at 03:16 AM
Hey Schoenke, tell that to the NRA! I just got a mailing from them this week warning on Barrack's gun control voting record (not his one statement on one court decision). His record is NOT in favor of the gun owner, hunter, or shooting enthusiast. The NRA only puts the icing on the cake as to why I WILL NOT vote for Obama, though.

Posted by: but it will Location: none on Oct 23, 2008 at 11:47 PM
Folks accross the country who've done nothing wrong will lose their right to own modern firearms such as the ar-15 (commonly used in shooting competitions for decades) with the passage of an "assault weapons ban". So, how can we but conclude that Schoenke isn't being entirely truthful. It's unjust to abbrogate the constitutionally protected rights of those who've done nothing wrong and aren't likely to. There's no valid reason for a national ban on modern rifles and shotguns. Except fear and fundamental mistrust of the American public. The American Hunters and Shooters Association is the pretty face of the Anti-Gun movement, trying to cozy up to hunters, hoping they'll forget the 2nd amendment has nothign to do with hunting.

Posted by: Jordan Location: Parkersburg on Oct 23, 2008 at 08:31 PM
The Hunters and Shooters association is a liberal, left wing organization that attempts to sway voters by endorsing democrat candidates. The NRA supports gun rights, not the HSA. Democrats WILL take away your right to bear arms, this isn't a question.

Posted by: Robert Location: Delaware on Oct 23, 2008 at 07:57 PM
huh...well i still think obama will take away firearms and the fact that Mcain is a ex-vet., he will never take away guns...thay saved his life(I have no proof of this statement). Also i believe that not just "outdoorsmen" should be able to own firearms, people need protection from men and/or women who commit crimes. Besides so many people have firearms that they will not be able to control the situation. I believe more people should speak their opinion and not be afraid of other people's opinion of thier choices.

You have GOT to be kidding me! Part 3 Obama INITIALLY voiced support of Washington DC's handgun ban. Following the Supreme Court decision on the ban, he voiced support of the decision overturning the law, saying, "Today's decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe." He also said, in response to the ruling, "I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms... The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view." (IOW, once he saw which way the wind was blowing, he changed his stance and pretended he felt that way all along!) Credit to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_positions_of_Barack_Obama#Gun_control and it's EXCELLENT list of sources for each point mentioned here.

You have GOT to be kidding me! Part 2 As state senator, he voted against a 2004 measure that allowed self-defense as an affirmative defense to those charged with violating local laws making it otherwise unlawful for such persons to possess firearms. He also voted against allowing persons who had obtained domestic violence protective orders to carry handguns for their protection. While in the US Senate, Obama has supported several gun control measures, including restricting the purchase of firearms at gun shows and the reauthorization of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban.Obama voted against legislation protecting firearm manufacturers from certain liability suits, which gun-rights advocates say are designed to bankrupt the firearms industry. Obama did vote in favor of the 2006 Vitter Amendment to prohibit the confiscation of lawful firearms during an emergency or major disaster, which passed 84-16. Obama has also stated his opposition to allowing citizens to carry concealed firearms.

You have GOT to be kidding me! As a state legislator in Illinois, Obama supported banning the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic firearms, increasing state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms. In 1996, during Obama's run for the Illinois State Senate, he was surveyed by a Chicago nonprofit, Independent Voters of Illinois about criminal justice and other issues. Obama's questionnaire showed that he supported a ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns. Subsequently, Obama denied that his writing was on the document and said that he never favored a ban on the sale and possession of handguns. In 1999, he urged prohibiting the operation of any gun store within five miles of a school or park, which according to gun-rights advocates would eliminate gun stores from most of the inhabited portion of the United States. He sponsored a bill in 2000 limiting handgun purchases to one per month. (Continued)
